This installation of five life-sized wells in a mountain reimagines the ancient multi-mouth well, recalling its historical role as a social hub for activities like drawing water, cooling watermelons, bathing and other daily communal tasks.
Inside each well, I pencil-sketched “water” surfaces in dense gr aphite on silk, a material traditionally used in Chinese gongbi painting. The reflections echo one another, mimicking the play of light and creating an illusion of depth, r eminiscent of the glimmers seen in real multi-mouth wells. In these subterranean architectures, multiple openings on the ground suggest an extensive underground space and interconnected water source.
